THE SPACE BETWEEN THINGS

In January 2022, Dominic Kennedy's course encouraged us to consider the spaces between objects when working from a still life, and to treat objects and the negative spaces between and around them equally. Collages were then created using torn paper and a palette limited to the three primaries. Paintings were then made from the collages. Cezanne, the Fauves and Cubism informed the approach. Studies of a still life from a high angle were made to further encourage a move away from natural perspective and towards abstraction. Finally, Morandi inspired the depiction of a single object set against or within a carefully composed and considered background.
